10 Unknown Facts About Himalayas

Mt. Everest's Original Name is 'Sagarmatha'. The Nepalese prefer to call Mt. Everest as “Samgarmatha” which translates into ‘Goddess of the Universe’ or ‘Forehead of the Sky’.


  • Rivers Originating from the Himalayas are older than the Peaks.


  • Himalayas stretches over 75% of Nepal.



  • The Himalayan mountain is stretching across six different countries namely Bhutan, Tibet, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan.



  • The Himalayas literally means 'Abode of Snow'. There are 25 peaks in the Himalayas, that exceed 8,000 metres. Also, it is one of the few places on Earth where the snow never melts.



  • Fourteen mountains in the Himalaya exceed 8000 metres. There are 25 points in all which exceed 8000 metres in the Himalaya.



  • This huge mountain range, served as a natural barrier for thousands of years preventing early interactions between the nationals of India, China and Mongolia.


  • It is about 2400 km long with a shape of an arc. Its width varies between 150-400 km. It has three parallel mountain ranges- Lesser Himalaya, Greater Himalaya, Outer Hmalaya.


  • The Himalayas are geologically alive. The mammoth mountain range is said to be moving approximately 20mm every year!


  • Tenzing Norgay, the first person to ascent to the summit along with Edmund Hillary, is said to have buried his daughter’s red and blue pencils on the top of Everest.
