Rohtang Pass Permit : Online Procedure, Details & Charges
Rohtang Pass is one of the famous Tourist Destination and the Gateway to Ladakh and Lahaul and Spiti. Getting a permit has been a difficult task for everyone as the permit is available for limited cars in a limited time. Well we should agree that these are the big steps which were taken to reduce the increasing level of pollution.
Obtaining a permit has become mandatory for everyone including motorcycles. Last there was a lot of confusion about motorcycles being exempted from the permit, but the authority has cleared the air that permits are mandatory for everyone.
The permits will be divided into two categories: one is "Permit for Tourism Purpose" and another one is "Permit for travel Purpose"
"Permit for Tourism Purpose" is for those people who will travel till Rohtang and comeback. This type of permit is limited as a daily limit of 800 petrol vehicles and 400 Diesel vehicles is in effect.
Daily Permit Limit (i) Petrol Vehicles = 800 (ii) Diesel Vehicles = 400 The permits can be obtained online in two time frames (i) 00:00 hrs to 10:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
(ii) 12:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs (200 Diesel and 400 Petrol)
"Permit for Travel Purpose" is for those who are passing through Rohtang and traveling to Ladakh or Lahaul and Spiti and there is no vehicle limit for such Permit.
No Vehicles are allowed on Tuesday as the day is marked for maintenance of Rohtang Pass. Permits can only be applied for next 2 days from the current date.
There is no requirement of Permit if you are coming from the other side of Rohtang Pass that is Ladakh or Lahaul and Spiti.
As told earlier, Motorcycles are also not exempted from the permit. There is no fees applicable for the permit of Motorcycle.
Rohtang Pass permits are now available on Sunday as well. In a very welcome and beneficial step for Tourists landing in Manali mostly on Saturday, Manali administration has allowed issuing of permits for people traveling beyond Rohtang Pass to Leh – Ladakh or Lahaul-Spiti Valley, even on Sunday as well.

Manali Administration has introduced the Online Permit facility for all the people which has become a big relief for the people. Remember again there are two types of permits: "Permit for Tourism Purpose" which is limited and other one is "Permit for Traveling Purpose" which has no limit. This kind of permit is issued without any quota.Please NOTE that a penalty will be imposed on defaulters who are visiting just Rohtang Pass and returning back from there on these permits to go beyond Rohtang Pass.
Rohtang Pass Permit Charges
All vehicles will be required to pay a sum of Rs. 500 as permit fee and Rs. 50 congestion charge, so a total of Rs. 550 per permit. Buses and Heavy motor vehicles will have to pay Rs. 100 for congestion charge so a total of Rs. 600 per permit. These charges are however applicable only for tourism purpose permits. For traveling beyond Rohtang, you will only have to pay a congestion charge of Rs. 50. There will no refund if you do not use or try to cancel your permit.
