But people are not aware about the new changes that some of the monasteries are offering stay for tourist which helps people to get a closer look towards Buddhist Culture.

  • Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery is one of the fine example of Tibettan Culture. This Monastery is located on the top of the hill and approx 19 Kms east of Leh City. Thiksey Monastery is one of the largest monastery and resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This Monastery notably containing a separate set of buildings for female renunciates that has been the source of significant recent building and reorganisation.
  • Lamayuru Gompa

Lamayuru Gompa is located on Srinagar - Leh Highway 150 Kms east of Fotula Pass at the height of 3,510 metres (11,520 ft). 50 Monasteries come under the leadership of this great monastery and about 300 monks are registered under it. This beautiful ancient monastery is the main seat of Drikung Kagyu tradition in the lower part of Ladakh.
  • Hemis Monastery

Hemis Gompa is the largest monastery in Ladakh. Hemis Monastery is situated 45 km from Leh City. This monastery, built in 1630, belongs to the red sect Brokpa of Buddhist order, later the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal. The annual Hemis festival honoring Padmasambhava is held here in early June.

The Phugtal Gompa owes its legacy to powerful and renowned scholars and teachers who resided in the cave, around which the monastery has been built, and has for long been a place for retreat, meditation, learning, and teaching. Phugtal Gompa is a Buddhist monastery located in the remote Lungnak Valley in south-eastern Zanskar, in the autonomous Himalayan region of Ladakh.
  • Rangdum Gompa

Rangdum is just 130 km from Kargil,and the view of the rangdum monestery is very attractive as there are various mountains and on the other side there are rocky mountains as well as glaciers. Rangdum Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery belonging to the Gelugpa sect, situated on top of a small but steep sugar-loaf hill at an altitude of 13,225 ft at the head of the Suru Valley, in Ladakh. It is next to the tiny village of Julidok, and about 25 km from the Pensi La pass which leads into Zanskar.
